Explaining California’s Adoption Issues

The California adoption process, like most states, inherently holds its own benefits and drawbacks for prospective parents who are seeking children for adoption. Making use of a private adoption center such as A is 4 Adoption is one way to gain guidance and support through a long, complex process. Many birth mothers are making the biggest sacrifice for love by putting up their baby for adoption, while adoptive parents are seeking to raise and support their own non-biological miracle. Both groups are striving to create the best environment for the child, yet our adoption system is full of babies in need and prospective parents endlessly waiting to adopt. Our private adoption firm provides guidance and support every step of the way. A is 4 Adoption was created after its founders faced their own issues with the adoption process. Today, we’ll take a look at a few issues that plagues California’s adoption system and why our open adoption options help to minimize the inefficiencies of this system.

Problem One – Budgeting Issues

The Golden State is well-known for its issues with state funding. Four years after stating that California had achieved a balanced budget, Governor Jerry Brown has recently come out to declare that this summer could see as much as a $1.6 billion deficit. Our President’s recent rash of federal budget cuts threatens to further limited the funds set aside for California’s child welfare services. Without money for county programs, California’s 58 counties are left to fend for themselves with severely limited resources. The adoption process through our state foster care is notoriously slow, yet the further lack of resources and employees leads to a system that may not be moving forward at all.

Problem Two – County Divisions

Every state has its own system for how adoption is overseen. In California, our public adoption services are supervised by the state but administered by each individual county. This results in a system that places in-county adoptions as a priority over those from a different area who are more available. The end result is an adoptive family that has to wait for years to be matched with their child when other kids from neighboring counties are ready to be adopted ASAP. This is one of the reasons why we see so many kids in need of adoption with no foreseeable solution, which is upsetting, to say the least.

Problem Three – Lack of Visibility

The statistics regarding children who need adoption versus how many are available through the state website is staggering. Kids-alliance.org illuminated this discrepancy in our most populous county. Their facts state that there are over 28,000 children who are currently in the foster care system in Los Angeles County. Additionally, about 1,400 of these children were actively available for adoption. The Children’s Law Center of California also adds input here, revealing that the end of 2013 saw over 101,000 children who were waiting to be adopted statewide. The rates of adoption here are grim, as roughly 25,000 children “age out” of their foster care every year and are released into society with no support. Approximately 40,000 infants are placed into state foster care each year, limiting their overall ability to properly grow and develop secure attachments. In total, there is a major discrepancy between the number of children available for adoption and the number listed as available online or through adoption agencies.

The overall length of time and resources required to place a child in need into the home of a loving family makes California adoption procedures a stressful endeavor. While the prospective parents may be hurt over the agonizing wait they have to complete, oftentimes the child in need is much more affected. A is 4 Adoption was founded to provide private adoption services in order to cut through much of the red tape present during the adoption process. Hiring an adoption agency in California can prove useful, but oftentimes not helpful enough.
