Healthy Nutrition for Your Pregnancy

adoption agency caMaking the decision to place your baby with a family through a California adoption agency is a loving, life-giving choice. It’s not the only one that you can make for the baby, though. You can give Baby the best possible start in life through proper prenatal care during your pregnancy, including making smart nutritional choices.

Why You Should Eat Healthy When Pregnant

The food that you eat while you are pregnant is the direct source of Baby’s nutrition. Essentially, what you eat, baby eats, and you’ll want to give them the right nutrition for health development. The nutrition they take in from your body is used to develop their brain, bones, muscles, eyes, and every other part of their body. The food you eat plays a big role in their development!

What You Should Eat

It’s important to eat a healthy variety of food when you are pregnant. You’ll want to get each of the food groups into your diet if you can:

Fruits and Vegetables

You should eat lots of fruits and vegetables during your pregnancy! These foods are packed with vitamins and minerals that both you and baby need to feel your best. Keep plenty of fresh fruits and veggies on hand for snacks and include a variety in your meals. If you hate vegetables, consider adding them to a smoothie to mask the flavor!

Carbohydrates

While this might be something you normally avoid, you’ll want to eat some carbohydrates and starches when you are pregnant. They will help you with your energy levels and provide an important source of nutrition for the developing child. Foods that are high in carbs include pasta and bread.

Dairy

This is an important source of calcium, so you’ll want to get some dairy into your diet. Talk to your doctor or health care provider about the best items to add into your diet, though, as there are some cheese and milk that you’ll want to avoid.

Protein

Protein is a must during pregnancy! Protein is the body’s building block and your body will need a lot of it during the pregnancy. Eggs, meat, and some nuts are great sources of protein.

What to Avoid

There are some foods that could actually be harmful to the baby, so you’ll want to be sure to avoid:

  • Raw eggs
  • Caffiene
  • Cold meats
  • Some cheeses
  • Some fish

Your doctor may have other suggestions on foods and beverages that are best left until after the baby is born.
